King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain were proud parents today when they were joined by their elder daughter, Princess Leonor – The Princess of Asturias, at the 2023 National Day Parade in Madrid. The event is a staple of Royal Calendar and what make a difference today was Leonor’s attendance as a Military Rank instead of as a daughter of the King.
Spain celebrates its culture, history and achievements every year on October 12th and the day is observed as a national holiday. Also known as as “Día de la Hispanidad” or Hispanic Day, the day also commemorates Christopher Columbus’s discovery of the Americas. The Royal Family attended a Military Parade at the Plaza de Cánovas del Castillo of Madrid followed by the traditional reception.
Today, when it came to pay tributes to the fallen war heroes who gave their lives for peace and nation’s security and when it was time to take the salute, King Felipe VI was not alone – he was joined by his heiress – The Princess of Asturias, Leonor. While King Felipe was dressed in the Air Force uniform, Princess Leonor was dressed in the khaki Army uniform.
Both Father and Daughter paid their tributes to the war heroes and then took the salute at the event that featured 4,177 military personnel, 86 aircraft and helicopters and 142 ground vehicles. Among the troops were some of the under training cadets and knights from Zaragoza Military Academy where Princess Leonor is currently training.
When the family headed to the Royal Palace for the traditional reception of the Government delegates, Military personnel, political and social figureheads, Leonor stood by her mother’s side to receive the guests.
