King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia and Princess Leonor of Spain presided over the XV Legislature opening at the Palace of Parliament in Madrid where a joint session of the General Courts, Congress of Deputies and Senate took place to mark the beginning of the legislative season. This was the first time The Princess of Asturias, Leonor, attended the event.
The Royal Family was escorted by the Royal Guard from the Palace to the Congress Palace where President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez and the Chief of Staff of the Defense, Teodoro Esteban López Calderón, received the Royal Family. The King, Queen, The Princess of Asturias were received with the military honours.
Flanked by his wife and heiress, King Felipe took the podium for the interpretation of National Anthem. Following her father’s lead, Princess Leonor was wearing both the Order of Congress and Order of Senate – that were presented to her on her 18th birthday.
King Felipe VI inspected the guard of honours and took salute. The Spanish Royal Family stood for group photograph before heading inside where King Felipe VI addressed the joint session to open the legal season. The King said, “I congratulate Don Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón on his election as President of the Government by the Congress of Deputies, having obtained the confidence of the House, as well as the members of the Government for his appointment. I also congratulate you on the great honour of your election as Members and senators. And I wish you all right on the responsibilities you have assumed.”
After the address, King Felipe, Queen Letizia and Princess Leonor greeted the newly elected members of the lower house. A small parade was held outside the Congress to mark the day where King Felipe once again took the salute.
This was Princess Leonor’s first public appearance since her 18th birthday celebrations last month on October 31st where she took the constitutional oath and was presented with the Order of Charles III by her Father. Leonor must have been feeling the absence of her younger sister – Infanta Sofia, who is in Wales for 2 years finishing International Baccalaureate.
