King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain were at the main Gallery of Royal Heritage Collection where they attended the 20th Anniversary of European Day in memory of the Victims of Terrorism. Last week, the Royal couple attended the annual Spanish terrorist victim memorial tribute.
The event was organised by the European Commission and the Government, which coincides with the 20th anniversary of the attacks in Madrid in 2004, in which 192 people died and 1,893 were injured. Every year, the European Day in Remembrance to the Victims of Terrorism marks a moment of deep reflection and global solidarity to commemorate those who have been victims of terrorism around the world. In September 2020, the Commission launched the European Union Platform on Victims’ Rights and appointed the first European Commission Coordinator for the Rights of Victims.
Addressing the gathering, King Felipe said, “The history of terrorism in Europe is the story of shared suffering, but also of solidarity among all Europeans. And so on this day of souvenir I want to put it especially in value. Because where there has been a terrorist attack, there has always been an extraordinary social response; an immediate action, a kind gesture, an encouraging attitude. This happened in Madrid, which was completely mobilised in the face of tragedy and horror”
