King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain had an away day in Seville today. The royal couple was in the county to undertake a couple of engagements.

Upon arrival, Felipe and Letizia attended a meeting with the Municipal Corporation of Écija at the Benamejí Palace, headquarters of the Municipal Historical Museum.

After the meeting, Felipe and Letizia met with the members of the public who were fighting the cold chill to meet the King and Queen outside the headquarters.

Next, Don Felipe and Doña Letizia toured the Municipal Historical Museum, whose objective is to contribute to the cultural revitalization and scientific research in the region.

The Municipal Historical Museum of Écija arises from the initiative of a promotion Commission formed by independent citizens that were positively welcomed by the City Council. The establishment of the Museum, which allowed the recovery of the Benamejí Palace for the city – an example of the eighteenth-century Ecijano Baroque, listed as a Historic-Artistic Monument – was a necessity in a city and a municipal term that possess an extraordinary cultural wealth, and It allows exposing, conserving and contributing to the general assessment of its historical and archaeological heritage, one of the richest in Andalusia.

In its current assembly, open from March 1999, a didactic Museum is scientifically updated in its contents and historically critical. The permanent exhibition spaces, which occupy around 650 m2, include five archaeology rooms where treasures of great artistic and cultural value are exhibited (Tartessian jewels, warrior steles, Roman mosaics …), a temporary exhibition hall and the Stables room. The Museum receives around 25,000 annual visitors, of which approximately half attend organized groups, and a quarter of the total are foreigners. Since 2000, the Municipal Historical Museum has been incorporated into the Network of Museums of Andalusia and its management corresponds to a Municipal Foundation.

Then the Spanish King and Queen headed towards the Educational Center “Professional Schools Sagrada Familia-Peñaflor Foundation”.

The centre is the winner of the “School of the Year Award 2019” of the Princess of Girona Foundation, whose jury highlighted its commitment to educational innovation adapted to the uniqueness of your students.

Don Felipe and Doña Letizia began their visit in the Infant and Primary Education building, where they visited the Infaciencia classroom, dedicated to promoting scientific vocational courses, especially among girls; the Inventa and  Emprende classroom, focused on the creation of products that provide solutions to society’s needs or problems.

It was storytime. The couple heard kids briefing volcanoes stories.

Next, the royal couple stopped at the Infant and Primary playground where students were playing team chess. This game is part of a project that encourages team decision making.

Don Felipe and Doña Letizia visited a classroom in the New Building, where the applications SOPAPP (Application for the solidarity distribution of food) and COCINAPP (Application to prepare recipes from food that we have in the fridge) were presented. They also visited the Classroom Project Company of secondary school students, dedicated to the development of team entrepreneurship projects.
