The Royal Family of Spain began their summer Balearic Islands agenda last week, and on Monday we saw the first family outing when King Felipe and Queen Letizia took their daughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofia, to visit the Charterhouse of Valldemossa in the Balearic Islands.
Every year at the end of July, The Spanish Royals moved to The Palace of Marivent in Palma de Mallorca for the summer break. Until 2017, the family used to stand for a group photograph for the selected press photographers at the Royal Palace of Marivent, but in 2018 they replaced the traditional photoshoot with local tours.
This year’s first location was the Charterhouse of Valldemossa. Located on the western side of the Balearic Islands, the municipality of Valldemossa is just a 30 minutes drive from the Palace of Marivent.
There was a lot of excitement in the town and members of the public were gathered in the narrow streets and outside the charterhouse to meet the King and Queen with both Princesses.
The Royals started their tour just like regular tourists. The Family, clad in casual summer outfits, arrived at King Juan Carlos I Gardens where they first stood for a family photograph to mark the visit.
Next, Their Majesties the King and Queen, and Their Royal Highnesses the Princess of Asturias, and the Infanta Doña Sofía received greetings from the President of the Balearic Islands, the president of the Parliament of the Balearic Islands, and other local authorities.
After the greetings, the family received a tour of the charterhouse from Concepción Bauzá, Professor of Art History at the University of the Balearic Islands.
The family learned about the history behind the historical building that once was a Royal residence. King Jaime II of Mallorca (second son of Jaime I of Aragón) built this building for his son Sancho I who was an Asthma patient in 1309. The location was selected due to its natural surroundings and calm weather. In 1399, the residence was handed over to the Carthusian monks who stayed here for hundred years.
The charterhouse was also home to the Polish pianist Frédéric Chopin and the French writer George Sand. The charterhouse still has many of its original manuscripts, scores, personal belongings, and paintings. The Royal family also enjoyed a piano performance based on Chopin’s music during the tour.
Don Felipe, Doña Letizia, and Their Royal Highnesses the Princess of Asturias and the Infanta Doña Sofía continued their tour with a visit to the Pharmacy, considered to be of great historical-scientific value, where they saw the containers that still preserve raw materials and original medicinal preparations dating from the second third of the eighteenth century. Before leaving, The Royal Family signed the Valldemossa City Council visitors’ book.
The current Charterhouse is the result of the expansion works of the 18th century in which a new church was built along with a new monastery in 1837. Today the rooms of the Cartuja are home to various artistic and heritage collections of great value, such as those relating to the legacy of the Carthusians and their lifestyle, the monastic pharmacy, the room of Chopin and Sand -illustrious guests of the Cartoixa-, liturgical furniture, ceramic sets.
Outside the charterhouse, The Royals headed toward the streets of Valldemossa near the Cartuja, where they ended their tour in a pastry shop.
