The Princess of Wales send Best Wishes to England Rugby

The Princess of Wales, Catherine, sent her best wishes to the England Rugby team that will be participating in the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. The Princess became the patron of the Rugby Football League and the Rugby Football Union in February this year. The RFL and RFU are the national governing bodies that develop and promote the sport in the country.

The Rugby World Cup is actually the 2021 edition of the world cup that was delayed due to the pandemic and now taking place in New Zealand from October 08th to 19th this year. In its attempt to make the world cup gender equivalent, the world cup committee has decided to drop the term ‘Women’ from its name this year.

“Hello everyone. I wanted to take a moment to wish the Red Roses all the very best of luck for the rugby world cup in New Zealand… Good luck for the weeks ahead. I’ll be setting my alarm clock early to cheer you on all the way.” – The Princess of Wales

To mark the new beginning The Princess of Wales joined a rugby training session at Twickenham Stadium in February this year where she met England players, coaches, and referees. About the new patronage, Kensington Palace said,

The patronage, which has been given to The Duchess by Her Majesty The Queen, closely aligns with Her Royal Highness’ long-standing passion for sport and the lifelong benefits it can provide, both within our communities and on an individual level. The RFL was established in 1895 and is the national body for Rugby League in the UK, a game for 13 players to a team.

A very interesting tidbit about this new patronage is that The Royal household has three patrons of the same sport but for three different nations – The Duke of Cambridge is the patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, Princess Royal Anne is the patron of the Scottish Rugby Union and now the Duchess of Cambridge has become the patron of English Rugby League and Union.

Then a few days later The Prince and Princess of Wales (The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at that time) attended the Six Nations Rugby match between England and Wales at the Twickenham stadium and brought Prince George with them.
