King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain travelled to General Military Academy in Zaragoza to preside over the flag swearing ceremony in which their elder daughter, Princess Leonor, was participating. Leonor began her military training in August this year. King Felipe VI presided over the ceremony as the head of the Spanish Army.
The Flag swearing ceremony is a milestone event in the life of Spanish Military personnel. The ceremony is considered their official entry in the military ranks. The cadets take oath to defend the Spanish flag, country and constitution. The event dates back to 1886 when at the request of Queen María Cristina of Habsburg, widow of her Majesty King Alfonso XII, the first swearing-in ceremony was carried out on July 17, 1886 in the Alcázar of Toledo, the initial headquarters of the General Military Academy.
Today, after arrival King Felipe VI inspected the troops and his daughter Princess Leonor was part of that troop. The event is part of Felipe’s schedule very often.
Later on, The Princess of Asturias, Leonor, walked down the red carpet and walked towards the national flag where she paid her respect and kissed the Spanish Flag. Felipe and Letizia were proudly watching the event from the pedestal near-by. King Felipe himself received his military training from the same academy and participated in the Flag swearing ceremony in 1985.
