King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain were in Tenerife today to learn abut the impact of the drastic forest fire that left its mark on 12 municipalities in the region. This was Queen Letizia’s first engagement of the week after last week’s dazzling Princess of Asturias awards. The Spanish Royal Family is gearing up to celebrate a milestone 18th birthday of Princess Leonor on next Tuesday. This week Infanta Sofia’s also home for the Fall term break hence Letizia does not have any other public engagement schedule.

In August 2023, the north of the island, from the Chipeque viewpoint, in Santa Úrsula, caught a forest fire and it took almost a month to control the calamity. The fire caused a heat wave that has been affecting the islands since the beginning of October despite being Autumn and add the lack of humidity,the situation has led to dozens of reactivations in hot spots inside and outside the initial perimeter of the fire.

The main region impacted by the fire and the post-fire heat wave are  between the municipalities of La Orotava and El Rosario. Only last week, the military emergency relief support was called off once it was established the situation is under control now. And the region has started to think about the damage control and rehabilitation now.

During the visit, King Felipe and Queen Letizia held a meeting with the mayors of the affected municipalities of Santa Úrsula, Arafo, Candelaria, El Rosario, El Sauzal, Fasnia, Güimar, La Matanza de Acentejo, La Orotava, La Victoria, Los Realejos and Tacoronte.
