King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain travelled to Valencia to meet those who were affected by the fire in the housing building in the Nou Campanar neighbourhood. At least nine people were killed by a huge fire that ripped through an apartment block in an affluent district of Spain’s third largest city, Valencia.
The blaze, fanned by strong winds, engulfed the block in Valencia’s El Campanar district within half an hour. Valencians flocked to donate clothes, medicines and toys for surviving residents who lost all their belongings in the fire.
King Felipe and Queen Letizia met with those affected and relatives of the victims. They also met with the first respondents and local authorities who worked hard to support the families and victims of the fire.
During the visit, King Felipe said, “ we wanted to recognize the work that everyone has done. We have seen through the media evidently what it meant, but nothing like being on the ground and knowing how complicated this fire has been, the unusual and the extraordinarily virulent and ferocious it has been. But we wanted to convey to all of our admiration and confidence, and gratitude for the commitment, the work. They are professionals in all their fields, but for a society, trusting that it has the right services and the men and women willing to give everything in these circumstances is a tranquillity”.
