The Royal Palace of Amsterdam is the largest and most prestigious building of the 17th century, making it one of the most important monuments in the Netherlands. It was originally not built as a palace, but as Amsterdam City Hall. In 1808, the building was first transformed into a palace and used as an official reception palace of the Royal House of the Netherlands, where world leaders and heads of state are received. During its construction in 1648, the city hall was considered the eighth wonder of the world due to its great beauty and enormous dimensions, but also because of the construction tasks.
A school group from the Het Amsterdams Lyceum Institute was also present to the greet the Spanish King and Queen. The Spanish section in Het Amsterdams Lyceum, called Trayecto Español, was founded in the region almost 20 years ago.
Duting the ceremonial welcome ceremony, both Kings and Queens met with the delegations and authorities from both countries who are participating in the state visit.
After the welcome ceremony, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain headed to the National Monument of Dam Square, where a floral tribute was paid to two soldiers and a wreath was offered in front of the monument, before the horn touch and the mandatory minute of silence. Every year on 4th May, in front of the Palace, the National Commemoration, is celebrated, in honor of the Dutch victims of World War II.
Then King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima hosted a lunch for the Spanish King and Queen at the Palace. Queen Letizia did not have any of her own agenda for the day but King Felipe undertook few joint engagements with King Willem-Alexander.
