Queen Letizia of Spain began her full day agenda in Croatia with the opening session of the ‘Congress on the Prevention of Childhood Obesity in Zagreb’. Letizia arrived in Croatia last night for this congress. The Queen had a busy international schedule for a couple of weeks – an inward State visit from Colombia, a quick visit to the UK for the Coronation of King Charles III and now a short trip to Croatia.
At the Congress, Queen Letizia was joined by the First Lady of Croatia, Mrs. Sanja Musić, as well as the spouses of the heads of Albania, Armenia, Hungary, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Malta, Serbia and Slovenia. The Congress aims to break the circle of childhood obesity in European countries.
Queen Letizia is the special nutrition ambassador for the Food and Agriculture , better known as FAO and is known for her healthy lifestyles. The First Lady of Croatia is a scientist and professor of medicine at the University of Zagreb. Both ladies have met twice in 2022 – once at the NATO summit in Madrid and then during the Royal visit to Croatia.
Speaking at the congress, Queen Letizia highlighted the crucial matter in English and said, “we have the figures and the evidence of the enormous public health problem that is childhood obesity. The most basic and devastating: according to the European Initiative for Childhood Obesity Surveillance, one in three school-aged children live with overweight or obesity. Not a single member state of the WHO European region is currently on track to achieve the goal of halting the rise in obesity by 2025, as reflected in the latest WHO European Regional Obesity Report”.
The WHO identifies childhood obesity as a serious public health problem among members of the WHO European Regional Group, where it is estimated that almost one in three boys and girls is overweight or obese. The congress was organised to establish a network of commitment to raise awareness about the risks of childhood obesity, and to promote a comprehensive approach that allows combating this phenomenon.
During her time at the Congress, Her Majesty The Queen also visited the “Doctor Andrija Štampar” exhibition and joined the Congress guests for the “Prevention and control of childhood obesity: challenges, successes, innovations and priorities” Dialogue.
The Spanish Queen also met with the executive director for the European region of the WHO, Robb Butler during her visit to Zagreb.
The last agenda on the itinerary was the Croatian National Theater. Queen Letizia attended a cultural program by a group “Ladarice” who performed popular Croatian songs and inside the theatre, Letizia attended a performance by the Zagreb National Theater Ballet.
