Letizia also saw the Casa Do Marco – a specialized centre in Portugal, which aims to care for the patients suffering from rare diseases. People with rare diseases constitute a population group that requires specific compensatory actions in the provision of services. About seven thousand diseases of this type are identified. These diseases are usually serious, chronic and cause the people they affect to require specialized and prolonged care or attention.

After the tour, Letizia joined the attendees of the conference in the auditorium where a discussion on the rare diseases held under the slogan of “Advocacy – Social Transformation in rare diseases”. FEDER organised this conference along with the European ( EURORDIS ), Ibero-American ( ALIBER ) and international ( RDI ) with the aim to start an initiative that will make international organizations such as United Nations recognise the issue of Rare diseases.

Letizia has always been passionate about this cause and attends regular meetings held by the foundation of Rare Diseases. About the cause Palace said,

These diseases pose an added problem as they are scattered and few groups. To guarantee equality in access to social, educational and health devices and the full participation of these citizens, reference initiatives must be launched to improve the care they receive, promote collaboration among stakeholders and promote research, information and the creation of specific devices to increase their quality of life.

It is essential to build national and international networks, platforms and common strategies, coordinate initiatives with the participation of all the concerned to play a decisive role in the actions. There is an absolute need to promote measures to equalize opportunities in order to guarantee access and care to defend the rights of the people with more common diseases and compensate them for the inadequacies in the care they receive, guaranteeing equity, quality, safety and efficiency in the services provided. Cooperation and coordination among all the services involved is, in this conception, a key axis of work.
